Not only were the first grants from a special unit of the Chancellor’s Office, the New Program Development and Evaluation (NPD&E), but the rationale for many of the other grants to the IAS and IMP were for improving education in the CSUS. In fact, the first three grants were used to stimulate the initiation of the IMP & IAS. So they served double purposes as education research AND establishing extra-departmental or interdisciplinary externally funded units.
