Cal Poly Pomona

The former Institute for Advanced Systems Studies (IAS) applied its experiences and 14 Interdisciplinary Courses in the university catalogue to initiate a new program that was designed to solve numerous problems with General Education Science requirements. This new educational program was titled Integrated Science General Education (ISGE). Because it was a new program that was passed unanimously by the General Education subcommittee of the university’s Academic Senate, and finally by the entire Academic Senate, it was granted funding from its HOME campus for its implementation. These disbursements only followed successful attraction of external funding for design and production of the new program from the other segments of this section; namely, other State, Federal, and private Foundation funding units. Although it is the first listed because it is the HOME campus, Cal Poly’s funding actually chronologically followed attraction of the external grants. Here is a specific listing and citation of those support grants:

  • $3,000 (in individual annual grants of $371 to $600 per trip) competitive Presidents Travel Awards, CPSU, for partial funding of trips to Edinburgh, Scotland; Portland, Oregon; twice to Vienna, Austria; Ostersund, Sweden; Univ. of Hawkesbury, Australia.
  • $4,996 as Continuing Education Seed Grant in “Multimedia Skill Acquisition and Training,” 1993
  • $4,944 as a Continuing Education Seed Grant for “Humanities and Business Faculty Participation in ISGE Program and Pilot Project,” 1994
  • $20,357 from the College of Science Dean for multimedia production for ISGE Program, Indirect Cost Recovery Program, 1994
  • $35,000 from the President and Provost, California State Polytechinic University, Pomona in support of multimedia course ware development for the ISGE program, 1995
  • $3,192 from Cal-Poly ITAC for production of a software program called the “Knowledge Mappertm September, 1995
  • $2,132 as a Supplementary Grant in support of the College of Science Multimedia Learning Lab, May, 1996
  • $12,000 as a Matching Grant form the CPP Academic Vice President for purchase of hardware and software to complete the Integrated Science Course ware, April, 1997
  • $7,000 Competitive grant form the CPP Center for Professional Development (SOAP 1) entitled, “Formative and Summative Assessment of the Integrated Science General Education (ISGE),” May 1997
  • $7,000 competitive grant from the CPP Center for Professional Development (SOAP 2) entitled, “Pioneering ‘Seamless’ and ‘Evolutionary’ Assessment Methods for the Integrated Science General Education (ISGE) Program,” May, 1998
  • $7,000 Third Year Renewal of SOAP  grant from the CPP Center for Professional Development (SOAP 2) entitled, “Pioneering ‘Seamless’ and ‘Evolutionary’ Assessment Methods for the Integrated Science General Education (ISGE) Program,” June, 1999
  • $18,000 from CSPU Administration for the purchase of new computers for the Integrated Science General Education Laboratory (CLA C5-8)
